Graphic Design Students Win 9 of the 10 Statewide ADDY Awards.

SDSU’s graphic design students had another strong showing at the 2014 ADDY Awards Night, winning “Best of Show,” and sweeping all three “Best of Categories” in student competition.

South Dakota State University makes a strong bid for awards each year having won 48 ADDYs out of 53 for the last three years. Caitlin Pisha of Fresh Produce, a graduate of SDSU’s graphic design program in 2012, took “Best of Show” in the professional competition.


Jordan Studanski won a Silver ADDY. Ally Klock won a Gold ADDY for her poster design with assistance from Bethany Brusven, Taylor Jenson and Garrett Chappell as Photographers. She also won “Best of Class Collateral”. Lacey Weelborg, Ethan Gacke and Elizabeth Long all won individual Silver ADDYs representing the South Dakota State University’s graphic design class at the University Center.

Jaylynn Martinez, Bridgette Nelson, Nicholas Olafson, and Michael Mazourek won a Gold ADDY for their “What Inspires You?” commercial for the Brookings Arts Council. They also won “Best of Class Television” for the project. Michael Mazourek won three Gold ADDY awards, also winning “Best of Class Elements” and “Best of Show” for his “Rise of the Bikes” infographic created during his internship at Lemonly. Sara Kohles of Augustana did the project management and copywriting on that project.

Additionally, SDSU’s graphic design faculty had a strong presence with Tim Steele winning a Gold ADDY for his calligraphy on the poster, “Van Zante Guest Artists.” Professor Randy Clark took one Gold ADDY and one Silver ADDY for his design work on promotional material for the Department of Visual Arts.  Professor Cable Hardin received a Gold ADDY in the Digital Advertising category for “Bed Bugs Bite” as Director, Animator, and Editor. He was assisted by Buyung Hadi of the Department of Plant Science as Director and Visual Arts student Dave Asuigui as Assistant Animator. Instructor Liz Heeren, as part of the Fresh Produce team, won a Gold ADDY Award in the Advertising Industry Self Promotion – Non-traditional category for “Merch Tent”.

Dan Edmonds, Senior Vice President of Creative Services at Lawrence & Schiller wrote an email to the faculty of SDSU, “Congratulations on the ADDY awards you picked up Saturday for the Van Zante and Martincic posters. Very nice work. And it was also great to see your students, especially Michael Mazourek, do so well in the student ADDYS. We’re looking forward to having him join us this summer as our design intern. Like you’ve said – you keep training them and we’ll keep hiring them.”

Alumni of the graphic design program are employed at: NBC Studios, FAME Retail, Target, Lawrence and Schiller, Paulsen Marketing, Daktronics, Salt Lake 2002 Olympics, among others. Three-fourths of all graphic designers working for advertising agencies in South Dakota are graduates of SDSU’s program.
